Geography

at Netherton

Geography is about the world in which we live and on which we depend. It seeks to explain how landscapes, people, places and the fragile environment are all interwoven. Geography aims to foster a curiosity, awareness and understanding of our changing world.

At Netherton Infant & Nursery School, we are passionate about teaching the next generation to explore, enjoy and care for our planet. Our the children are encouraged to be inquisitive and develop their curiosity and fascination about the world around them. Through an enquiry based curriculum, with a key focus on first hand experiences and fieldwork they will develop a deep knowledge of place so they learn to value and appreciate the uniqueness of where they live, our school community and the wider world.

As a staff team, we have identified the key knowledge and skills for each year group and consideration has been given to ensure progression through school. In nursery the children begin to examine their home environments moving on to their school environment and immediate area when in reception. Once in year one the children begin to explore the village of Netherton and surrounding area, going on to then look at the British Isles and the capital cities. The year 2 children look at the wider world learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans.

Whole school assemblies focus on climate change and how this is affecting our planet. In these assemblies the children are encouraged to think about small changes in their life that could make a difference to climate change.
